Logan Airport
Logan Airport is the Boston airport where Rachel Creed, racing to return to Ludlow after her son Gage's funeral, misses her connecting flight to Portland, Maine, forcing her to rent a car and drive the rest of the way through the night.
Rachel's Missed Connection
On the night after Gage Creed's funeral, Rachel Creed flew from Chicago to Boston's Logan Airport, hoping to catch a connecting Delta flight to Portland, Maine, and then onward to Bangor. Her Chicago plane left on time, was cleared straight into LaGuardia, and left New York only five minutes behind schedule, but it arrived at the gate in Boston fifteen minutes late, at 11:12 P.M., leaving her only thirteen minutes to make her connection. The shuttle bus that circles the Logan terminals was late, and Rachel waited, shifting from foot to foot in a constant low-grade panic. When the shuttle still had not come at 11:25, she began to run through the terminal in her low heels, one ankle buckling painfully, until she took off her shoes and ran on in her pantyhose, breathing hard and developing a stitch in her side. She burst through the doors of the Delta terminal at 11:37, but the gate attendant told her that Flight 104 had rolled out of the jetway at 11:40, and he pointed out the window at the 727 with its running lights bright, already starting its takeoff roll. Rachel cried out in frustration, and when the attendant explained that calling the plane back would have caught it in the parade going out to Runway 30, she walked away without listening to the rest.
The Decision to Drive
After missing her flight, Rachel walked back toward the terminal, feeling faint, and stumbled into another gate area to sit until the darkness passed. A security guard, seeing her distress, suggested she rent a car if she really had to get to Bangor, and Rachel realized she could drive the roughly two hundred and fifty miles from Boston to Ludlow. She calculated that at sixty-five miles per hour on the turnpike, the drive would take about four hours, and she could be back in Ludlow before first light. She started for the car rental desks one level down from the concourses, and the security guard called after her, "Good luck, honey. Take care." Rachel felt that she deserved some good luck, and she rented a car from Avis, beginning the long drive north that would eventually bring her to Jud Crandall's house at dawn, where she would be killed by her resurrected son.
